Called to play with wax once more,
this time on 8"x10" gesso board.
This piece morphed a couple times,
ending in this peaceful field..

Encaustic wax is a very fun medium. Painting with wax originally dates back to ancient Greece and Egypt. Modernized versions include a painted technique and the method I used here, dehan wax and an iron.

The heated iron spreads the wax about and I get all the credit! How cool is that?

All images are on 4" x 3" painting cards.

With the trees, (which will always find a way to be in any of my artistic explorations) I used flakes of bronze and gold leafing for the leaves. The sky used to be there, but with a hot iron, sometimes you have to modify the image whether you want to or not.

See, I told you the iron does all the work!

Landscapes are the easiest to do with encaustic wax. The 'paint' is a very refined, light fast, colored wax. Melted at a very high temp, the wax I prefer is Dehan wax. Developed and produced by an English company and found at almostabstract.com. By lifting or pushing a hot iron across the surface, the textures are created, making painting fields and cloudy skies almost effortless.

Inspired by Chris' instructional and website at almostabstract.com, this futuristic canyon pretty much painted itself. After I experimented with the landscapes, I got brave and created this one.

And it's one of my favs..
